• Year 6 Maths Challenge at Merchant Taylors

  A group of Year 6 pupils competed at the Maths Challenge at Merchant Taylors this week. In a titanic competition, we came a creditable 4th.

  This week, rock music filled the air! We welcomed parents to view their children as they performed their learning over the Autumn Term. The audience of family members were treated to the hard rock tones of bands such as The Tiger Warriors, The Dumb Smarties and of course, Red Velvet the Cake Hound. 
   We streamed the concert to the rest of the school, and everyone was unanimous – the children rocked! Thanks to Bertie from Rocksteady who has worked tirelessly with all of the children over last term and this term. The children have loved taking part. 

   Other highlights - some Year 1 artwork inspired by the story Handa's Surprise,  some amazing digital art created using scratch by Year 5 and some descripive writing by some Year 3 pupils!

   Our Maths displays went "live" this afternoon. How impressive they look, and what a marvellous showcase of pupils' practical maths learning. There are examples of counting and number in Early Years, where pupils could find the difference between numbers; and there was some in depth statistical analysis from Year 2 (there is still much debate as to the most popular recorded dinner, although the tally and bar charts reveal a strong case for pizza); Year 4 also had some lively discussion as to which was the most popular football team in the class - some data leans towards Watford, while other surveys reveal Manchester City(!)

   A time capsule arrived at St Meryl today. 

   Although we did not have the 70th anniversary celebrations that we truly wanted, to mark the occasion, our time capsule is due to be buried very soon, and the children were asked what to put inside. Much debate was had about this (will a USB stick be able to be used in 50 years?), and there were some imaginative ideas contributed. Items included a Micro Machine police car from Early Years, a SATs paper from Year 6, a St Meryl Shirt, and photos of all the children. Some items were considered too difficult to be put in, such as a young man in Reception who wanted to put his dream of a teacher as a superhero in there.

   What a performance the children put on this year! Despite not being able to welcome any live visitors, we have recorded all scenes, and they have been uploaded to our Vimeo channel. Please do watch your child’s performance – it will make all our hard work worth it! Details of how to access the videos were sent in a letter last week. Here are a few highlights. 

   We are also thankful to the PTA, who despite having to cancel our "normal" Christmas Fair, were still able to come up with something that at least the children could enjoy - lots of fun activities and the children left feeling full of the holiday spirit (and quite a few cakes)!

   We are getting a new library! Work has intensified recently, and pupils in Year 3 and 5 have been fascinated with the "knock knocking" sounds they can hear next door to their classrooms. 

   By Christmas, we are hoping that all of the major works will be completed, and we can begin to choose colour schemes and carpets. We look forward to a time when children can enjoy reading their books in a peaceful, calm environment. 

   We also were reminded how to keep safe online both at school, and at home.
