What's been happening at St Meryl this week?

Week beginning 5th November
Fri 09 Nov 2018Monday
Mrs Geddes started the week with an assembly about Diwali. We learnt about how this festival is celebrated and the significance of light in the Hindu religion and others.
Tuesday
Years 5 and 6 were visited by the NSPCC to do workshops following on from the assembly before half-term.
Elsewhere in the school Mrs Kotecha came in to visit children in Years 2 and 4. We got to sample some food and celebrate Diwali.
And Nursery children made soup and practised their cutting skills-it made the whole school smell delicious!
Friday
History day! Miss Gocher organised a variety of learning opportunities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. We dressed up in war-themed clothes or red for poppies. We listened to the 'Last Post' and were silent for one minute. Then we had our very own street party just like people did at the end of the first and second world wars.

Week beginning 22nd October

The NSPCC visited to lead assemblies with the children. They told us about Childline and what to do if we had any worries.
Tuesday
Mrs Geddes took the newly elected House Captains to visit our friends at Northwick Day Care Centre. We chatted and read to them and kept them company for the afternoon. Mrs Geddes was VERY proud of them.
Thursday
A busy day!
We held our annual Harvest Celebration. All of the children had prepared something for the celebration and we enjoyed singing our Harvest songs. Thank you to all of the parents attending and for collecting lots of food for the South Oxhey Food Bank.
Later we also had a visit from A Truefitt Collective Dance Theatre who brought us their Magical Minds Dance performance and workshops. The focus was on promoting good mental health. We loved it!

Week beginning15th October
Fri 19 Oct 2018This week we had our first lockdown drill. It went very well and the children were super calm and sensible. Mrs Geddes was very proud of everyone!
On Thursday Nursery came to visit Mrs Geddes with their Autumn sun catchers. You can see them displayed in the Nursery and some in the main entrance.
On Friday the PTA organised a Hallowe'en movie night. We all dressed up in scary costumes, ate pizza and hot dogs and snuggled down in our duvets and sleeping bags to watch a film. It was great! Thanks PTA!

Year 4 participated in a chocolate workshop today learning all about how chocolate is made before making their own tasty treats!
Tuesday
Mrs Geddes took a group of children to an able writers workshop. We got to meet the author Nick Cook and write our own imaginative stories. Nick reminded us to never give up on our dreams and that hard work will always end in good results eventually.
Thursday
It was the turn of Year 1 to present their learning at their class assembly. The whole school joined in with their cheerful singing. Well done Year 1!

The week started with a drama and dance workshop for some classes. It was brilliant!
Tuesday
We celebrated our International Day of Languages. Classes rotated around different activities during the day including making a Spanish dictionary, singing songs in Spanish, making universal peace flags and learning about the food and culture of different countries. We also got the chance to visit the Spanish cafe and order in Spanish! The day ended with an assembly attended by parents.
Thursday
Mrs Geddes joined in with children in Year 2 making bug hotels-it was great!

Mon 01 Oct 2018We were treated to a visit from Living the Dream this week. Children participated in dance workshops and were inspired to be creative! -
'Welcome to...' meetings
