We are getting a new library! Work has intensified this month, and Years 3 and 5 have been fascinated by the "knock knocking" sounds that hey can hear next door to their classrooms.

Hopefully by Christmas, the major works will be completed and we can spend time choosing colour schemes and carpet types. We are all looking forward to the time when pupils can enjoy reading books in a calm, quiet environment.

Pupils also learnt about how to keep safe online both at school and at home in our e-Safety assembly.

We thought that we would share some of the pictures that we found in our archives to commemorate our 70th Anniversary as a school. Although it looks as though we will not be able to celebrate in the way that we intended, we are still grateful to the members of the community who sent or emailed photographs and information to us. We have learnt so much about our school! We will carefully archive these for when people get the chance to properly come in and have a look at them.

What was that noise echoing down the corridors on Thursday afternoon? It was Year 4, who were taking part in their first ever trombone lesson! Over the years, we have had intensive lessons from the Herts Music Service with Year 4 - including Djembe drumming and ukulele. But never have we had the opportunity to play the trombone. Although it was the first lesson, and some of us couldn't quite get them sounding like we wanted them to, I know that after much practise we will be confident to perform to the rest of the school.

Pudsey Day! Pupils this year were able to dress up in spots, Pudsey clothes or however they liked - for today marked an inaugural event in St Meryl history - our very first Break the Rules Day!

Children revelled in the opportunity to eat their dessert before they ate their lunch. Some wore their clothes inside out. Some refused to write for the day (although they typed their responses instead).

We raised £257.09 – a great effort! Thank you to Miss Pomfret, Miss Marshall and the School Council for organising the activities for Pudsey Week.

In other news, Year 5 participated in some Autumn Art - taking the opportunity to sketch some of the wonderful colours that adorn our school at the moment.

More baking! This week it was the turn of Years 3,5 and 6 – who made pizzas! They final verdict on how they tasted was left up to the families, as somehow every single one made their way home without out a slice being offered to their envious teachers/ head teacher.

This week was the turn of Year 1 to WOW the audience with their class assembly. Complete with singing, dancing, science, maths, art and so much more, it was brilliant performance. Who knew a class so young could do this?

In Early Years, poppy prints were made from celery to mark Remembrance Day. We all stood for our two minute’s silence while the Last Post rang through the hallways.

A pupil shared her writing me on Thursday afternoon, but this was no ordinary piece of writing. This was a TEN PAGE EPIC FANTASY tale. I was captivated by the scale of this piece – the detail of the setting, and the actions of the characters.

This week – diggers and builders filled the space between Years 3 and 4 classrooms, where it was once a wasteland of overgrown weeds and plants will soon be a brand new Library! We are very excited to soon have a place where we can all enjoy and develop our love for books!tch

We also saw the return of interschool football to St Meryl! Our first game in a long time saw the might Year 4 and 5 Boy’s team play Chater School. The match report is below:

" Tuesday afternoon saw St Meryl take on Chater at home. St Meryl started well with a couple of good chances. A good counter attacking goal from Chater saw them take the league after some good defensive play. St Meryl responded with some nice football, and equalised shortly after with a goal. If not for chater keeper St Meryl could of had more goals in the 1st half.
St Meryl responded in the second half with a few good chances. Archie got on the ball and started creating chance after chance and finally Chater defence couldn't cope under the amount of pressure from St Meryl. The 2nd half become a goal feast which saw St Meryl score 8 goals. Great play from Dylan, Archie and Javadali during the game.
A good first game from St Meryl and plenty of positives to take into the next fixture. Player of the match was George, with a postive attiude and great team play during the game."

Two pupils from year 6 shared some astonishing descriptive writing about a mouth-watering feast, and Year 4 pupils fresh from a triumphant class assembly somehow found time to make some Diwali sweets.

In other news, Year 3 also baked some bread under the support of our 2 resident master chefs from Chartwells.

FIRST CLASS ASSEMBLY!!

We were so excited to invite parents into the hall to see Reception Class present the first class assembly of the year, and what an assembly it was. For us older people, it is quite easy to forget how nerve-wracking standing at the front of a crowded room can be. However, the longer the assembly went on, the more confident the children became. So confident were they at the end, that they performed a reprise of the Months Song!

Well done, Reception! Our first Class Assembly since March 2020!!!

Autumn Term Week 5

A busy week at St Meryl! Yet more children in Year 1 sent to the Head Teacher to show their ever-improving handwriting and story writing skills.

Spiders have visited Nursery! Not only was art created of our Arachnid friends, but they also had time to make some edible ones!

Rocksteady kicked back in this week as well - with 2 drummers in one of the bands this year, we are going to be well and truly turned up to 11!

Finally, Year 6 crept in with some suspense stories. Enough to send shivers down any spine!

Autumn Term Week 4

This week - a focus on the Makaton Champions.

Makaton Champs are 2 (or sometimes more) members of each class, who meet each week with Miss Wenzel to learn a new sign or two. During Friday Assemblies, they all stand up and teach the whole school their sign. This week, the sign was for "Thank you".

The Makaton Champs received their badges in assembly this week. Here, you see some of our youngest Makaton Champions.

Thanks to Miss Wenzel, for leading this wonderful group of children. We have big aspirations this year - maybe even singing a song in Harvest Assembly using Makaton!

Autumn Term Week 3

This week, pupils in Year 6 gave presentations for House Captains, which will be voted on later in the week.

It was our first Sharing Assembly! This week is was the turn of Early Years and Key Stage 1. Nursery sang to as all about the manners they have learnt this week, Reception showed off their PE skills, Year 1 showed yet more tremendous writing and Year 2 invited us to their bug hotels.

Friday also marked Jeans for Genes day. We raised £185.80 for this fantastic cause - to assist those who are living with genetic disorders, and to also raise awareness of the challenges that are faced. Thank you, St Meryl.

Autum Term Week 2

Week 2 saw the pupils back into the swing of things, and catching up on lost time. Some of us worked on our handwriting skills (which will be a focus for all of us over the next few weeks), and Mr D was even asked to come and see the progress that children had made. We welcomed back Coach George - and this year Nursery and Reception get to take part in PE sessions as well!

The week ended with Year 6 giving presentations for Head Boy and Head Girl.
